Is a regular bike helmet safe enough for an e-bike?

It depends on your e-bike's speed class and where you ride. Any bicycle helmet sold in the U.S. must meet CPSC's federal safety standard, which works for typical pedal-bike use. At Class 3 e-bike speeds (up to 28 mph), however, crash forces are higher than what standard bike helmets are designed around. Helmet requirements vary by state and local law. For higher-speed Class 3 riding, riders should check local requirements and may prefer an NTA 8776–certified helmet such as the Lumos Ultra E-Bike.

What is NTA 8776, and do all e-bike riders need it?

NTA 8776 is a Dutch safety standard created specifically for speed pedelecs and Class 3 e-bikes. Helmets meeting NTA 8776 are designed for higher-speed impacts and provide coverage over a larger portion of the head. If you ride a Class 3 e-bike or regularly exceed 20 mph, NTA 8776 is worth prioritizing. For Class 1 and Class 2 riders, it's not required, but the added protection is still a reasonable upgrade.

My e-bike already has built-in turn signals and lights — do I still need them on my helmet?

Not strictly, but helmet-level lights serve a different purpose. Lights on the bike sit low and can be partially blocked by panniers, bags, or the rider's body. Lights on the helmet sit at driver eye level and rotate with your head, making you visible from more angles — especially to drivers pulling out of side streets. If your e-bike is already well-lit, treat the Ultra E-Bike's lights and signals as a redundant visibility layer. If your e-bike doesn't have built-in signals, the helmet fills that gap.

How do turn signals and brake lights work on the Ultra E-Bike?

Turn signals are controlled wirelessly from a handlebar-mounted remote. The included Remote Lite activates turn signals only. Automatic brake lights — which flash brighter when the helmet detects sudden deceleration — require the full Lumos Remote (sold separately). The full Lumos Remote can also integrate the helmet with compatible Lumos Firefly lights for shared turn-signal and brake-light control.

What does the retractable eye shield actually do?

At 20–28 mph sustained speeds, wind makes your eyes water, and insects, rain, and road grit hit harder. The Ultra E-Bike's eye shield flips down to block these, and retracts into the helmet when you don't need it. The shield also houses the front-facing turn signal LEDs (13 yellow + 13 white on each side), so drivers approaching from an angle can see your intent — not just drivers directly ahead or behind.

Will the Ultra E-Bike fit me?

The Ultra E-Bike is offered in a single M/L size that fits head circumferences from 54 cm to 61 cm (21.25"–24"), which covers most adult head sizes. Measure around the widest part of your head, about an inch above your eyebrows, before ordering. Lumos offers a 30-day return policy if the fit doesn't work out — see our return policy for full details.

What if I'm in an e-bike accident?

Any helmet involved in a crash should be replaced, even if it looks fine — the foam inside may be compressed. Our Accident Replacement Program offers a discounted replacement (based on MSRP) for eligible helmets purchased from lumoshelmet.co, our official Amazon store, or our Kickstarter campaigns within the last two years. You'll need photos of the damage, the serial number (on the white sticker inside), a description of the accident, and proof of purchase. The helmet also comes with a one-year limited warranty covering manufacturing defects.
